08/08/2014 - Majority of visitors wont be affected as some sections of the walking trail on Sliabh Liag close

In the interest of public Safety Donegal County Council has decided that it is necessary to restrict access onto some sections of the walking trail on Sliabh Liag during an operation which will see over 500 tonne of stone lifted onto the mountain by helicopter. These sections will be closed during the week commencing Monday 18th August 2014.

Donegal County Council wishes to stress that the works and the closure of these sections of path will have no impact on the majority of visitors to Sliabh Liag as the upper car park and viewing areas at Bunglas which are the destination for the majority of visitors to Sliabh Liag will remain open at all times during the helicopter lifting operations.  The helicopter lifting operations have been arranged in consultation with stakeholders including the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Mountaineering Ireland, local hill walking groups and others.  The exclusion areas have been designed to minimise both risks to the public whilst also minimising the impact on visitors to the area and affected businesses.

This is to facilitate the delivery of stone by helicopter to carry out works to repair the existing trail. These works are expected to commence on Monday 18th August, but given that the works involve the delivery of stone by helicopter, the weather conditions will play a significant part in the scheduling of the works.

During the delivery process access to sections of the mountain trail at Sliabh Liag will be blocked at the following locations:

  • 400m North of Bunglas car park (still allowing access to car park and viewing platform

  • Pilgrim Path car park at Shanbally

  • One Man’s Pass at Ballymore

Donegal County Council and Metro Building Contractors acknowledge and apologise for any disruption that may take place during the necessary delivery period.

These works are funded by Fáilte Ireland and Donegal County Council.
